Kalki Subramaniam is an Indian transgender activist, artist, author, actor and inspirational speaker. She is the founder of Sahodari Foundation which works for the wellbeing of transgender persons in India.
Kalki advocates in India against discrimination of transgender people and voices for their inclusion at all levels. She has spoken at numerous academic institutions across India and has been fiercely creating awareness among millions of students on transgender equality in India, Kalki was one of the major campaigners behind the Indian Supreme Court’s verdict legalizing transgender identity in India.
She became the first transsexual actor in India to do a lead role in an Indian major motion picture ‘Narthaki’, and uses experimental poetry and artworks for her theatre performances.
She has received numerous awards for social work and her literary contributions towards transgender rights. Her collection of poetry ‘Kuri Aruthaen’ published in 2014 speaks volumes about the necessity for equality for transgender people.
