Rahul Kanwal is one of India’s most decorated journalists and serves as the Managing Editor of Aajtak and India Today news channels. Every weeknight at 10 PM Rahul anchors India Today TV’s flagship prime time news broadcast Newsroom. He is responsible for managing the most formidable news gathering team in India, comprising more than 500 reporters of the TV Today Network who are spread all across India. Rahul has powered some of the most hard hitting investigative stories to emerge from India over the past decade. The exposes unearthed by Rahul and his team of investigative reporters have led to public functionaries having to resign and also helped bring about large scale changes in the policy making apparatus in the country.
At a time when India is sharply polarised between right and left, Rahul believes that instead of rushing to take sides, Editors must remember that the essence of journalism is to bring out both sides of the story and help viewers reach an informed conclusion rather than have the anchor force his point of view on those watching. Apart from driving television news coverage, Rahul has a keen eye for digital reportage and has led the initiative on many innovative online story telling formats. Rahul believes in 360 degree reportage and the need for reporters to be present on TV, print and digital media all at the same time rather than being restricted by any one platform. Rahul studied Journalism at Delhi University. He’s a Chevening scholar and has done a programme in International Broadcast Journalism from Cardiff University. He also won a Rory Peck Trust grant for a course in Hostile Environment Journalism. Rahul is a fitness enthusiast and loves to play racquet sports. He’s also fond of navigating white water kayaks. He likes to spend his spare time with his wife and two year old son.
