Jayant Rajaram Patil, is the state president (chief) of the Nationalist Congress Party for the
state of Maharashtra, India. He has represented the Islampur constituency for 6
consecutive terms as their Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). Mr.Patil was
the Cabinet Minister for Finance & Planning for a record consecutive 9 years, and was also
the Cabinet Minister for Home and Rural Development in the Congress and Nationalist
Congress Party led government in Maharashtra (1999-2014).
During his tenure as Finance & Planning Minister, he played a crucial role in stabilizing the
economy of Maharashtra. Where he introduced new tax reforms in the state like the Value
Added Tax reform and fiscal discipline was achieved, and he presented a surplus budget was
presented in parliament after a long hiatus. Furthermore, he also holds the record of
presenting 9 consecutive financial budgets in the state of Maharashtra and was also the
youngest serving Finance Minister of Maharashtra till date.
Additionally, Mr. Patil took over as the Minister of Home Affairs, Maharashtra in 2008
where he initiated the modernization of the Police force, by introducing state of the art
weapons, surveillance systems and vehicles to combat terror. It was under Mr.Patil’s tenure
that the Force One Task Force was established, as he thought the state should have their own
special task force.
