Om Rawat(65) took over as 22nd Chief Election Commissioner of India on 23rd January 2018 and retired on 1st December 2018 and during this period delivered elections to the State Legislative Assemblies of Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Karnataka, Mizoram, MP, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Rajasthan . He held office as Election Commissioner at Election Commission of India since 14th August 2015 to 22nd January 2018 and as such took part in delivering elections to the Legislative Assemblies of the Indian States of Bihar, West Bengal, Tamilnadu, Kerala, Assam, Puducherry (UT), Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur, Goa as also elections to the offices of President of India and Vice President. Empowering common citizen through C-VIGIL mobile application to video/photograph any malpractice by political party/candidate or Government/election officials and submitting on this App so as to send it to all responsible authorities in one press of a button through GPS enabled IDs was launched and piloted in Bengaluru during Karnataka polls. It has been stipulated that the concerned officials shall verify the info, and take appropriate action and inform the complainant within 100 minutes. Facilitating persons with disabilities to enrol and vote was another important initiative .
Om Rawat held office as Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Department of Public Enterprises for nearly two years in 2012-13 and as such was Chief Advisor to Govt on management of State Enterprises. Also he was ex officio President of Governing Council of International Centre for Promotion of Enterprises, Ljubljana, Slovenia, an intergovernmental body with membership of around 25 countries. He also worked at middle management level at the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
Om Rawat has experience of working at policy formulation level in the state of Madhya Pradesh in the sectors of Agriculture and Cooperation, Education, Mass Communication, Welfare of weaker Sections, Child Development, River Valley Development and participatory irrigation, Industries and Commerce and State Revenues. He was conferred Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration for the Year 2008-09 for innovative team initiative of Recognition of Forest Rights of Scheduled Tribes. He also faced a Judicial Enquiry when he stood up to protect the rights of an adult girl (23) to live with a person of her choice against the wishes of her community.
Om Rawat holds a Masters Degree in Physics from Benaras Hindu University, Varanasi ( India) and another Masters in Economics from University of Wales, Uk.
