Member of Parliament
Mahua Moitra is a Member of Parliament, elected from the Krishnanagar constituency in West Bengal. She won a Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 elections as an All India Trinamool Congress party candidate. Prior to this, Moitra was a member of the West-Bengal legislative assembly, representing the Karimpur constituency in Nadia district on the Indo-Bangladesh border. Moitra began her career as an investment banker with JPMorgan in New York and then in London first in mergers and acquisitions and then on the proprietary trading desk. She quit her job in 2009, after rising to the position of Vice- president to enter active grassroot-level politics in India. She has since been involved in various organisational roles including booth-level cadre building and co-ordinating rural development programmes. She is currently a General Secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress and serves on the Standing Committee on Information Technology in the Lok Sabha. Moitra is the first woman legislator from the area and also the first to belong to a non-Left party in the past 40 years. She earned a degree in Economics and Mathematics from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts.
